Store the dehydrated medium at 10-30☌ and use before the expiry date on the label. The medium contains yeast extract, which provides nitrogen and vitamins required for growth. It is important to avoid preparing large volumes which will cause prolonged heating. XLD Agar is a moderately selective and differential solid medium for the isolation of gram -negative enteric pathogens (like species from Shigella and Salmonella) from clinical and specimens or food products. Pour into sterile Petri dishes as soon as the medium has cooled. Transfer immediately to a water bath at 50☌. Heat with frequent agitation until the medium boils. Suspend 53g in 1 litre of distilled water. The sensitivity and selectivity of XLD Agar exceeds that of traditional plating media, e.g. XLD Agar (Dehydrated), Oxoid Preparation: XLD Agar is a selective media for the isolation and differentiation of Salmonella, relying on xylose fermentation, lysine decarboxylation and production of hydrogen sulfide for the primary differentiation of Shigella and Salmonella spp. XLD Agar (Dehydrated), Oxoid Composition Typical Formula* Xylose Lysine Desoxycholate Medium (XLD) + Novobiocin, 90mm Plate Description Related products Thiazine Red Stain, Plastic Bottle Nesslers Reagent. The careful addition of sodium desoxycholate inhibits the growth of coliforms without decreasing the ability to support shigellae and salmonellae. The medium relies on xylose fermentation, lysine decarboxylation and production of hydrogen sulphide for the primary differentiation of shigellae and salmonellae from non-pathogenic bacteria. Don’t use an inoculating loop for stabbing tubes. Don’t use it if there is a crack in the medium. Look for cracking of the medium in test tubes before inoculation. Isolate Salmonella and Shigella from clinical specimens and foods with selective Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ XLD Agar (Dehydrated). Charging usually takes about 1 to 1.5 hours from low energy state. I have both the original and the successor. This is the light I use most often, because it’s there when I need it. In spite of its two shortcomings (sealed battery, cool low-CRI emitter) I would be quite disappointed if it died. Olight’s site says it can be fully charged in 75 minutes. The next time, it took an hour, but that was when it had not been used much at all. I wondered if it simply wasn’t charging or something was wrong. I had used it a fair bit but the light was still bright, so the battery wasn’t flat. Recently I got a bit worried when it remained charging for three hours before the green “charged” light came on. The head does not come off, or at least I have not found how to remove it. The key for me was that one little spot rotating the head where it allowed the head to become sideways. It seems its almost a press fit joint where the tolerences are kept pretty tight but fit with enough force. I found that when the head is screwed all the way out exposing the usb port if you keep rotating the head there is one place in the rotation that allows the head to kick a little sideways and wiggling the head around in that spot the head came right off without a lot of force. I didn’t try it but hopefully someone else may hate the tint way more than me. The driver + led look like they are pressed in and may not be easy to get out. It works by having three different contact points. You’ll have to excuse my teflon grease, I greased it up and was about to reassemble before I decided to share what I found. Played around with it a few minutes and managed to get the head off the battery tube. I couldn’t figure out how this light went together. The downside is that the fight takes longer but keeping yourself topped up on health is so vital to learning the later phases and ultimately surviving the final climb. Take your time to dodge attacks and only attack or heal when you have a safe window, unless its an emergency. Perhaps the most valuable thing I learned through all my deaths was patience. After that, it was just trying again and again, learning the phases. I also went with Soul Catcher which gives you more soul for hitting enemies, and ditched quick heal on the internet's advice and swapped in Dashmaster which lets you dash more often, a lifesaver for all the dashing you have to do against Radiances flying spike walls.Īnother tip I got online was that magic is good for Radiance, so I used Abyss Shriek (the spell that goes upwards) where-ever possible in phases 1 and 2 to inflict extra damage whenever I had soul to spare. I stuck with Quicknail as its great not only for beating Hollow Knight faster, but in the floating platform phase, you can rapidly hit Radiance if you can get onto a platform with him. Now I was more tanky thanks to Lifeblood Core, I could survive longer and learn Radiance more. I could now go into Hollow Knight with full Soul and it would help that go faster as well. One amazing bonus from having all the charms is you can go and get Salbura's Blessing from the shop, which refills your Soul at benches. So I tried using that, and the great thing was that when your health refills between Hollow Knight and the Radiance, your lifeblood health gets refilled as well, so that's a few extra free hits you can take during Radiance. No way I would have ever figured out how to get that one by myself. The other charm I was missing was the Lifeblood Core which gives you 4 extra health that can't be healed once gone. I tried this along with the Weaver charm which summons spiders to do passive damage, which wasn't bad but drained my soul too easily during the boss, leaving me unable to heal. One was the vengefly one, which summons little flying knights but drains soul. In the end, missing 2 charms in my collection I decided to look up their locations online. I looked on the internet for some tips and there are loads of different suggestions for charms to take. I was still struggling to make it to phase 3 after hours of play. As for other charms, in the past I'd relied on ones which give you soul, faster healing, minions and long nail in various combinations. This lets you swing the nail faster and so it really helps get past Hollow Knight more quickly, so I was able to get to Radiance more easily to learn the fight better. I started using Quicknail which I'd seen was quite handy in Mapocolops' playthrough. So I knuckled down and started practicing again. I'd hardly ever made it to phase 3 where Radiance teleports around all the floating platforms. Before this year I'd only managed once to get to the final climbing phase (and died instantly), and usually I couldn't even get through the first two phases on the flat platform. So here's the story how my journey with this fight evolved, followed by a video of my winning run. We at hawatari have put together a list of the more common (and less common) Japanese knife types and styles. That translates into less weight and that is why Japanese knives of similar size are lighter than their western counterparts. Another benefit of harder steel is that the knife blades manufactured in harder steel can be made thinner than blades made out of softer steel. Harder steel allows for much greater edge retention – that is why Japanese knives stay sharp for much longer than western knives. Japanese kitchen knives are generally made out of much harder steel than their western counterparts. Urasuki also provides some other benefits as well. The concave pocket of air in the urasuki prevents the food from coming into contact with the whole blade, thus reducing friction. Thanks to the urasuki feature a single bevel knife can cut much better. There is actually a slight hollow grind on this flat looking side of your knife. To find urasuki on your single bevel knife, just look at it’s backside, the one that appears flat. This hollow part is called “ urasuki” in Japanese. One unique feature of japanese single bevel knives is a hollow part on the backside of the blade. In laminated versions the layer of the hard steel creates the cutting edge of the knife and softer steel layer creates most of the body of the knife. Damascus patterned, many layer laminated single bevel knives are commonly being called “ kitaeji“. Mono-steel versions are called “ honyaki” and laminated versions made out of two layers are called “ kasumi“. Japanese single bevel knives are manufactured both as a mono-steel version and as two (or more) layer laminate. Single bevel knives are more often than not being outfitted with japanese style handles. There are many other single bevel knife types in Japan. Asymmetrical grind generally allows the edge to have a more accurate angle, which results in a more sharper edge.Ĭommon single bevel knives include yanagiba (sashimi slicer), takobiki (square tipped sashimi slicer), deba (japanese filleting knife), usuba (professional knife for vegetables). Some knives are even ground at 90/10 ratio. Instead of more typical western grind, when the edge is ground symmetrically at 50/50 ratio, Japanese prefer a 70/30 ratio. Japanese double bevel knives have more often than not a more asymmetrical grind. Another popular lamination method is known as “ damascus” laminate. Typical lamination methods include “ san-mai” and “ warikomi” laminate, where hard steel core is sandwiched between two layers of softer steel. Japanese double bevel knives are manufactured both as a monosteel version and as a laminate version, where several different layers of steel unite into one blade. Double bevel knives can be made both with traditional Japanese handles and with western type handles as well. There are even more double bevel knife types in Japan. Most of the sharpening on a single bevel knife happens on the kireha side.ĭouble bevel knives include gyuto (Japanese equivalent to a western chef’s knife), santoku (knife used in the home kitchen), nakiri (knife used mostly for cutting vegetables), sujihiki (western type slicer) and petty knife. Kireha is generally ground at a very acute angle. The wide grind on the open side of a single bevel knife is called “ kireha” (translates from Japanese as “ blade road“). The opposite backside of the knife looks flat. Single bevel knives have a wide grind on the open side (right side) of the knife. Japanese knives generally are divided into single bevel knives and double bevel knives.ĭouble bevel knives have a bevel on both sides of the blade. Some of Japanese knives have the word “ hocho” or “ bocho” incorporated into their names. Japanese kanji for the word “ kitchen knife” is “ 包丁” and the correct spelling, if written with western letters, is “ hou-chou” or “ bou-chou”. A kitchen knife is called “ ho-cho” (or “ bo-cho”) in Japanese.
